The biggest planning question for PoE 2 players approaching version 1.0 is not whether an Early Access character survives, but where that character will remain useful. The game's FAQ says existing characters will not be erased, so the time spent refining a build and gathering Path of Exile 2 Currency will still have value. That progress will stay in a separate Early Access league, however, rather than moving into the new 1.0 Standard environment.
What happens to an Early Access character
Version 1.0 is designed as a fresh starting point. Characters, equipment, items, and currency from Early Access are not described as moving into the new release leagues, and the FAQ does not provide a route for doing so. This matters if you are deciding how much effort to put into a late Early Access upgrade. A powerful setup can remain worthwhile for personal testing, unfinished content, or future revisits, but it should not be treated as a head start for the 1.0 economy.
The practical choice becomes clearer when you separate long-term collection from launch preparation. Keep using an established character if you want to explore its current build or finish objectives before the transition. Create a new character later if your priority is competing in a fresh economy, learning the launch balance, or making early purchases without relying on older resources.
Players returning to an older character should also expect some maintenance. Updates can alter skills and related systems, which may leave an old setup less effective or less convenient even though the character itself remains available. Before investing more resources, inspect the skill arrangement, passive choices, equipment requirements, and any mechanics that the build depends on.
How to avoid a growth gap after launch
A clean 1.0 start can create a temporary gap between what your old character can do and what a new character can afford. The safest response is to treat Early Access as a testing ground rather than a storage plan for launch. Use it to learn which abilities feel comfortable, which gear requirements are restrictive, and which improvements are worth pursuing without assuming those assets will reach the new leagues.
These habits help keep your plans realistic before the reset in available league progression.
Record the core skill and support choices of any build you may want to recreate.
Keep valuable equipment on the character or league where you actually intend to use it.
Test expensive upgrades only when they improve your immediate Early Access goals.
Review changed skills before copying an older setup into a fresh 1.0 character.
This approach preserves useful knowledge even when the economy does not carry forward. It also prevents a common mistake: spending remaining resources as though every item will become part of the launch market. Your notes and build understanding can cross the transition; the old league's inventory should be considered local to that league.
What account purchases carry between games
Account purchases follow different rules from character progression. The FAQ says Path of Exile 1 stash tabs can be used in Path of Exile 2 where the related content exists. A tab tied to content that has no equivalent in the second game will not appear there. Platform ownership can affect access as well, with tabs becoming remove-only when you sign in on a platform where you do not own them.
Microtransactions from the first game are also intended to work in Path of Exile 2, although some may remain unavailable until they are added. If you change platforms or are checking for a particular cosmetic, verify its status instead of assuming every purchase will be immediately usable everywhere.
Choosing between the remaining leagues
Before version 1.0, Runes of Aldur continues alongside Forbidden Rites. The latter is an event league with its own challenges and a fresh economy, so joining it requires selecting it at character creation and starting a new character. Both leagues are set to end when the full release arrives, making the choice more about short-term goals than permanent progression.
Runes of Aldur makes more sense for finishing existing challenges or continuing a character you already understand. Forbidden Rites suits players who want a separate economy and a new progression route before launch. Improvements introduced in patch 0.5.5, including changes to the Trial of Chaos, apply across the game rather than being limited to the event league.
Early Access began on December 6, 2024, on PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5, while version 1.0 is scheduled for December 11, 2026, Pacific time. If you are deciding where to place your remaining effort, keep the distinction simple: develop an Early Access character for current enjoyment, and prepare a new launch plan for the fresh leagues. Save build notes, confirm platform access, and treat POE 2 Exalted Orbs as part of the economy where they are earned rather than an asset guaranteed to cross into 1.0.
